Being very fond of old religious collectibles, I was so excited when my daughter took a little trip to Dallas and found this wonderful old Nativity set. Mary is about 4 ft tall so that will give you some idea of the size of these pieces. Were they a part of a Church set up? Who made them? They seem to be made of paper mache covering old spray foam insulation. Cracked and crazed and shabbily painted-just the way we like them...

Well, I had a moment before retirng to the bedroom. Have to work tomorrow so I thought I would show a little snapshot of my newest project. I hope all the animal lovers will not hate me. I have had a fascination with the beauty of a deer's face. Lately there are alot of magazines using taxidermy animals as decorating objects. I love animals and never thought in my wildest dreams I would purchase a Deer head and actually want to embellish it in my style. So I went for it! I wanted to be able to redress her for the seasons. The head piece is removable, and the lace is simply tied around her antler....

While in the midst of working long, long hours at the hospital, it is very refreshing to come home to a GOOD surprise. My oldest daughter had a creative moment and got busy. Here is the result.....I have always thought that old mannequin's would be a wonderful base for new ideas. Nina and I have talked about decking one out for Christmas for years. And as usual, time flies and before you know it several of those moments come and go...Wishing everyone a Wonderful Simple Thanksgiving and to appreciate all the things life has to offer,
especially the simple things...

It's been a while since my last post, but I am pleased to say that I am now back at Lonestar Antique Mall here in Watauga, Tx. Amongst my busy nursing schedule, I have found some time for my daughter and I to share a booth at Lonestar. We have been filling it with some great shabby pieces and some handmade items as well. My daughter decided to take a few photos of the booth yesterday, and yes the walls are painted a lovely black! Please enjoy!

As I seem to be on a light kick lately, I thought the dining room should be the next project. Luckily while visiting a local thrift shop several months ago, I stumbled on a wonderful newer chandelier that I thought would go perfect with the dining room colors. ( And at the price of $50.00 who could go wrong...) Or, if I decided to, could be painted later a different color. Question was is this thing going to work? Well it does and I love the results. I bought a cord cover from my friend Dorothy, aka Shabby Y at Lone Star, and here is how it looks.......

Sometimes the simplest touch can make the greatest impact. I have had this neat old iron and wood chandelier for quite some time now. Knowing exactly where to put it wasnt the issue, just getting it done is the hard part if you do not know how to do it. Luckily, my brother volunteered and the results are lovely...Add a burlap cord cover and instant shabby prim....

After a sweaty day yesterday, winter has come back. Christmas is but days away. Have I finished with anything? No, but I have learned you need to take life easy and not fret over the small stuff. Decided to do a Country Christmas meal so I guess chicken of some sort will be on the menu. I do love Turkey and Ham, but it gets a little tiring to keep repeating Thanksgiving and Christmas meals that are about the same. Listening to lovely Christmas music makes me happy and adds to the overall Christmas feel. Now all we need is a little bit of snow......

It's that time of the year again, and isn't it funny how seeing decorations makes you get into the mood . I have been roaming a bit and have taken several Christmas pictures. Word has it that there is a new antique store opening today. I had to check it out myself. Antique Emporium located in North Richland Hills Texas boasts several dealers that I have worked with and several I have not. If you are smitten by primitives, you won't be disappointed. Chippy crackly furniture and vintage goodies are around every corner. The mall is nearly full and still has several dealers coming. And yes, there is a tearoom ready for you to rest and enjoy lunch. If anyone would have told me that my love for vintage and worn objects would out weigh my love for new goodies, I would have told them they were crazy. Well, I will have to eat those words. I continue to be drawn to the old vintage loved objects whether small or large. Yesterday, my friend Barb decided she needed to make a change in her home which lead to a change in mine. Take out the tall black and brown cabinet in her front door and bring it to Tiina for her boring and empty kitchen wall. Well, although I am a fan of black and natural brown, it just didn't feel right with my colors. In comes the Martha Stewart colors in differing shades of grey. Light on the outside and darker on the inside. Should I stain or not? Hmm....Haven't decided yet, but at least the piece has been painted and distressed. Just in time for Thanksgiving...

Thank you so much for the well wishes.....Week 3 has now come and gone and feeling better everyday. Christmas is around the corner-it seems like I just said that, and another year has sailed by. Have been busy trying to figure out this years Thanksgiving dinner. I love to watch cooking shows and buy recipe books-why is it that I never use them? I attempt a new recipe every year. Dessert is the easiest, as everyone never has a problem eliminating a good dessert! Hmmm....Maybe the awesome Lemon Velvet Pie that is in Southern Living Magazine or the Roasted Vegetables that look so good in Better Homes and Gardens. Maybe I will try both!!! The leaves are turning color and the air is cool and crisp. If I am going to have a few "hot flashes" I am glad they are happening at this time of year...

Well, 2 weeks ago today I had my surgery. And I was hoping that once all is said and done that I would feel like a new person. Thankfully, that wish came true. Who would have thought that a hysterectomy could make someone feels sooooo much better. I had alot of friends tell me it would change my life, and they were right!!! Love to you all!!! Big changes coming for me not only with the improvement in my health, but hopefully in the rest of my life. Now all I need is a good job, my father's health to drastically improve, a change of scenery, and my youngest daughter to improve in her behavior. Of course my father's health is the main one so if that is all I can get, I will be totally satisfied with that.....Etsy is doing well (thank goodness) and if no one has tried to do it-what the heck are you waiting for? Sad to be leaving Lone Star Antiques, but hopefully that is only temporary till "other" things get solved. I need to concentrate on family right now-so that is what I will do......

My lovely daughter surprised me with a new kitchen table. I adore Harvest tables, and I have to say this one is wonderful. Dove grey and bought from World Market. Heavy and clunky with a wood grain texture. I love it !!!! They also have matching benches (see mine) and chairs. Now, all I have to do is change the chandelier to a more old charm wooden chippy one (which by the way I have ready to go) and Thanksgiving will be a blast. Surgery finally scheduled for next week-hopefully I will feel as good as this table looks when all is done......

I bet that I can assume that most of us love bling. The older the better. There is truly something magical about smokey rhinestones and vintage jewels. Today I found a jewel at Lone Star Antiques. A beautiful rhinestone tiara. But before I could wear it, I brought it home and listed it on ETSY. Well, the rest is history. It sold within a few minutes of the listing. Love it when that happens, but on the other hand would have loved to decorate with it. I am de-stashing the garage again and came upon a box filled with all my old marble busts. Listed all of those. Made a little road trip to Dallas yesterday with my girls. Found a few goody shops and was frankly quite shocked by some of the prices! What's the next best thing to shopping? Great prices!!! Whatever the economy, everyone is always looking for a good deal. Massive matting to his ears led to a drastic overhaul. His get up and go got up and went! Along with his fur coat and ears. Oh well, at least we are able to start over and it will all grow back; and I bet he is sooo comfy without all that fur in this terrible heat. Our Poodle has become a new breed, wonder what we will call him with his new do?.....

Her hobbies include sleeping, barking,sleeping,eating,sleeping,shredding up leftover papers,sleeping again, and turning her back on the male species. She is particularly fond and proud of her bowed legs, one of which heads south when she runs. She enjoys counting her spots and rarely brushes her teeth. She has lately considered herself a full-size gal having gained a pound over the last year. She does not want to have any puppies because she claims it will stretch her beauty marks. " Meet Buger (Lynn's youngest). He is unable to disclose his age as he was abandoned as a young pup during a fleamarket fiasco. Mistaken for an old hand me down sweater, this little guy snuck into a nearby rusty watering can only to be rapidly snatched up by Lynn. Being dragged several miles through Canton with SR pulling the cart, poor Buger became so motion sick that he passed out for several hours and woke the next morning in Lynns yard. What's a dog to do? Well, for starters, scratch at the front door and act injured when the owner opens the door. Which is exactly what Buger did and the rest is history. This little guy enjoys barking non stop. He has the uncanny ability to lift his ears up and back which I hear the ladies love. Although small in stature, this little guy packs a big punch if you know what I mean. He loves spotted females, lanky legs and slim hind quarters. Hmmmm....sounds like another dog I know. He has a bad habit of chewing his right paw and can sometimes be heard knawing all night. This developed as an aftershock of his abandonment, but Lynn and SR do not want to remind him of that. He enjoys playing and barking with his 2 brothers, and yes, follows them with an occasional marking on the furniture. One cannot expect perfection, but he comes close. Well, it is St Patty's day and what a lovely day it was. Had lunch with my pal Marcey and her daughter, did a little snooping along the way at Cottage Panache Antiques and loaded up my Etsy store again. You know with all the hype about Ebay (and don't get me wrong) Etsy is tons easier and to the point. If you have not tried it you really should. It is a very simple way to make some extra money with your discards. Ebay has really gotten to the point of fees and more fees and now they are advertising their new no listing fees, but if you really read the rules about that-not such a great deal after all...And they are now charging 9% on all sold items WoW!!! Someone is getting greedy. I have had some really great moments with Ebay and some not so great, but enough is enough already....Now I am on a tangent (hope I spelled that right). Either way you look at it there are some really great internet options to selling now. Especially during these difficult times it is nice to know that there are other options out there and ways to make a little extra cash...Try it what do you have to lose...

Well, one could get spoiled with the wonderful weather we experienced yesterday and hopefully for days to come. Spring Break is next week. Hmmmmm, is that a good thing? I used to wait eagerly for vacations from school, but nowadays kids get bored the minute the bell rings. How does one appease a bored 14 year old girl? Ranging from $28.00 to $70.00 her clothes are truly unique and original. She gets what she gets, so one has to be there and snatch them up quickly before they are gone. The majority of her clothes are priced in the mid $30.00 range so with today's economy you really can't go wrong. They coordinate easily with one another and can be worn with leggings or jeans and still look great! And did I tell you they have that shabby vintage look.......Can't wait for Spring....

Ok, so I bought this kinda ugly old vanity/dresser at Goodwill today. Check out all the old water marks and stains. You really have to look beyond the "ugly" and try to imagine the beauty in the piece. Is it the lines or the wood? Is it the age of the piece and does it have the potential to become something much more? I love to look beyond an item and try to transform the piece into a one of a kind treasure. I think we all love to do that. It is amazing how that "ugly duckling" can really become a Swan....Tell me what you think. Ok, so I have to admit it has been a while since I have done anything, little own a project to blog about. I have looked at this large canvas for weeks-sitting in the hallway. What to do, what to paint. It is a large one that you can get at any Michaels, and for 40-50% off depending on the sales and their coupons. So a large $20.00 canvas that began so dull can actually look quite fantastic if you have the inspiration- a photo (rubber stamp in my case), a projector, and a black paint pen. Paint the background any color ( I used my furniture paint) and begin........

You've heard me say this a hundred times-wow! does time fly by. My dad is healing nicely and we are taking it slow. He has his first doctor's appointment tomorrow since his triple bypass surgery. I know he will be exhausted, but he is ever so antsy to get outside into the fresh air-even if it is to see the doctor. Now that the really cold weather has passed, maybe I can concentrate on a little bit of painting. My painting and creativity have been on hold for a while. In the meantime, I will post some more lovely photos that I find inspiring......

I want to thank everyone for all of their prayers and well wishes. Dad sailed through his triple bypass surgery and was up the next day eating pancakes for breakfast. Of course, breakfast was followed by a little hit of Morphine but after all of this he deserves it!!! By tomorrow the chest tubes may be a thing of the past. He is expected to come home by Tuesday. My love to everyone out there who said a little prayer for me and my family.....Love to you all........

I remember as a child hearing my parents say-especially when the money was in short supply-that even though we want gifts for Christmas, just be thankful for your good health. I am sure everyone has heard that before. Well, as one gets older (and wiser) that statement really starts to make sense. This year is that such year for me. My Christmas wish is that my father has a successful Triple Bypass surgery. We are awaiting the date, and know it will be before Christmas. He has for so long been literally the strength of our entire family. You could not ask for a better dad than mine. Giving and generous, always there no matter what, a great father and good husband, and an extremely hard worker who never asked for anything and did everything for his family. It is frightening and heartbreaking to watch, in such a short period of time, this pillar of strength deteriorate day by day. I am hopeful that this surgery will be the best thing that has happened and that it will give him back, even in the smallest amount, a better spirit, more hope, and better health and strength. I love you dad......

Well, tomorrow we are finally in December. Another Christmas is on its way. I started to put up my tree and decided that this year I will have to lift it off the floor so our dear little Presley won't be tempted to eat the flocking. I am not quite sure if I like it lifted, but I don't need unwanted vet bills. The table is simply a cheapy one from Goodwill that I covered in lace tablecloths. I have not yet started to put many ornaments as I still haven't decided what I want to put on the tree. I did find all my lace trims and some cheesecloth (trying not to spend money this Christmas since I have so much stuff), so I am slowly digging through the garage. I have had a fun time searching for wooden candle sticks to paint. I added a few more to my dining table and my new cherub centerpiece. Since the old antique alter candles are so high-just find some cheap ones and paint them all the same color. Add some lace and old ornaments and it will look simple and lovely. I love the mercury glass ornaments, but those seem to be hard to find this year as well. Hmmmmmm.....My wheels need to start spinning so I can get that once in a month burst of ideas.....

Days keep passing but there will be a light at the end of the tunnel. My father has been quite ill for the last 2 weeks so we are doing a health overhaul. Today 2 doctor visits and Monday a full lab workup and MRI of his heart. It is not fun to grow old (unless you remain healthy of course). My parents 50th wedding anniversary is coming at the end of the month. I do not think my mom looks at my blog, so I am going to post a pic of the picture of them I had enlarged, and then painted a frame to semi-match it. I love this picture. It is of their first date. Christmas is slowly approaching and the stores are doing their transformations. Took a little trip to the Funky Monkey a few days ago and here is what is happening there-Everything !!! I have to say that every inch of that store space is magically utilized. Jewels and purses and clothes and leggings. Candles and creams and chippy old paintings.......You could spend hours there and not see everything. Amy and Lisa were there to greet my daughter and myself-always nice to see them...Christmas has made its way there with both old and new decorations. I loved her wall of vintage religious pictures (all for sale of course). Her front display is white and silver which we all love. If you have not been there before it is well worth the trip....

Sometimes we think of ideas that seem like good ideas, and then they seem a lot harder to achieve than we originally thought. They may be too complicated or take to much time to complete. I bought a lovely top piece from Felicia of Bountiful several months ago. Now, I first thought this will look fantastic on top of my kitchen cabinets once I got them painted. Well, long story short, it was too deep and at 14" deep it would have hung over by 2" and most likely busted the crown molding above the cabinets. So then it sat in my living room for weeks. My lovely dark wood carved top piece. Then I thought why not find a bottom piece to put it on and go from there. As I am in the process of trying to create a neat kitchen island out of a vintage piece of furniture, I came across an old magazine which showed an old vintage buffet as a kitchen island so I started my search. (by the way I have now forgotten about the top piece). Luckily a week ago I found one for $120.00 and could not pass it up. You know me-out comes the cream colored paint. Painted it and scraped it and decided not to stain it this time. I think it came out well and has been in my kitchen for about 4 days until today.....I had one of those Ah Ha moments and dragged out the top piece and started to paint away. Painting it the same color as the vintage buffet in my kitchen. Now I bet you know what I did next. I measured the top piece and the buffet and decided that with a 2" difference in their sizes that I would go ahead and see if they would fit together. They did and I am excited over the way in which it turned out. Now snuggled in my dining room-which is another project in the works.......
